Signs & Wonders: A Study of the Gospel of John
Session 1: “But These Things are Written…”
In John 20:31, we read “But these [things] are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name.” While all of the four Gospels tell the same basic story of Jesus’s life, death, and resurrection, John’s Gospel is a little different. Join me for this first session in a study of this life-giving gospel, where he explores the context in which John was written and examines some of the ways that John differs from the other three Gospels to argue that John is interested in showing us something specific about who Jesus is and what he came to earth to do.
Session 2, Part I: “In the beginning…”
This session, we dive in to the words of Scripture, looking at the Prologue to John’s Gospel (John 1:1-18) and exploring how even in the opening lines of his Gospel, John is raising some important theological questions for us to consider. Part II of this session– a separate video– discusses John the Baptist’s ministry and the humor present in the calling of the first disciples.
Session 2, Part II: A Voice in the Wilderness
“Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Join me as I walk through the second half of John chapter 1 and pose some questions for reflection. John the Baptist is introduced, Jesus appears on the scene, and we see the humor in the calling of the first disciples and Jesus’s unfortunate home town.
Session 3: The 7 Signs of Jesus
In this session, we finally get around to exploring the signs and wonders described in the title of the study. Join me as I look specifically at two of the seven signs– the Wedding at Cana at the Feeding of the Multitude– to talk about how a sign differs from a miracle and how one might read a sign like a parable.
Session 4: Nicodemus
In John chapter 3, one of the most oft-quoted verses of Scripture comes during an exchange under the cover of night between Jesus and a man named Nicodemus: “For God so loved the world that he sent his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life.” Nicodemus appears twice more in John’s Gospel– once in chapter 7 and once in chapter 19. Join us in this session as we explore who Nicodemus was as a Pharisee and community leader, trace the arc of his spiritual journey, and ponder what his example has to teach us as Christians in the 21st C.
Session 5: The 7 “I AM” Statements
“I am the bread of life.” “I am the light of the world.” “I am the good shepherd.”
These are just a few of the “I am” statements that Jesus makes in John’s Gospel. Join me as I explore the significance of these statements, and how each of these divine attributions reveal more about God’s character.
Session 6: The Last Supper and the Farewell Discourse
In this session, we discuss Jesus’s final speech to his disciples before his arrest, and uncover the 4 things that Jesus wants them (and us) to know.
Session 7: The Crucified King
The cross isn’t just what it’s all about for the Gospel of John, it’s what it’s all about for us, too. Join me as I explore Jesus’s arrest, trial, and crucifixion in this, the penultimate session in the series.
Session 8: Post-Resurrection Appearances
Join me for this final session in the study where Mary Magdalene finds the empty tomb, Thomas questions the reliability of his friends’ witness, and Jesus cooks breakfast by the Sea of Galilee. We’ll explore these post-resurrection experiences to find that where John’s Gospel ends is where our story begins.
